Filename Template Tags

SynthEyes uses dynamic tags so that you can standardize filenames and folders to be based on the name of the shot, project, etc., so that you don’t have to constantly be setting up filenames, and you can move projects from machine to machine and with minimal customization have them still work. The tags are intended for a variety of uses; some will be inappropriate for some uses.

Tags that are folder names do NOT have a trailing slash (/).

The names labeled “Preference” below are all set from the Folder Presets section at bottom-right of the Edit/Edit Preferences panel. Warning: they may be blank if you have not configured them!

<APPDIR> SynthEyes application folder. Don’t try to export there or anything!

<BATCHIN> Batch Input Preference

<BATCHOUT> Batch Output Preference

<DATE> Date in local time zone. “2025-07-04" (See <UTCDATE>)

<DEDUPE> Mesh Deduplication Preference

<DESKTOP> Your desktop folder

<DISKCACHE> Disk Cache Preference

<DOCUMENTS> Your documents folder

<EXPORTDIR> Exported file directory from an individual export. Not generally useful.

<EXPORTER> Human-readable exporter name “AfterEffects Javascript”

<EXPORTNAME> Exported file base name from an individual export. Not generally useful.

<EXPORTS> Exports Preference

<HOME> Home directory “/Users/russ”

<IMAGES> Images Preference

<IMPORTS> Imports Preference

<MACHINE> Your machine name “Skippy”

<MASKML> Mask ML Masks Preference

<MULTIEXP> Multi-Export FILE Preference

<PHASELIB> Phase Library Preference

<PREVIEWS> Previews Preference

<PROJ> Short Project name. The shorter project name from File/Project Selector.

<PROJECT> Project name. The full project name from File/Project Selector.


<PROJECTS> This is a folder preference, intended to be used as a top-level folder for all the projects to sit under (using <PROJECT> or <PROJ>)

<SCENEDIR> Scene file's folder. If the file hasn’t been saved yet, this is the scene’s first shot’s folder.

<SCENENAME> Scene file's name (no path or extensions). If the file hasn’t been saved yet, this is the scene’s first shot’s name.

<SCENES> Scenes Preference

<SCRIPTS> Scripts Preference

<SHOTDIR> The first or a specific shot’s folder.

<SHOTNAME> The first or a specific shot’s filename (no path or extension)

<STARTFRAME> Starting Frame# for the shot, eg “001” or “1000”.

<SYNDOCS> User-visible documents folder

<TIME> Time in local time zone. “14-58-37" (See <UTCTIME>)

<TZONE> Time zone (offset) eg “-0500” or “+0330”

<USER> User name “Russ”

<USERDATA> User data folder “C:/Users/Russ” or “/Users/russ”

<UTCDATE> Date in UTC for global use “2025-07-04"

<UTCTIME> Time in UTC for global use “19-58-37"
